Ever since I paddle-mounted my Go Pro HD Surf Hero, I've been on a mission to pull into closeouts to get that elusive barrel shot. Of course, San Diego doesn't really have big, hollow, powerful waves, but every now and then, we get some mini Puerto Escondido action.
This morning, the wind was blowing strong offshore, the tide was dropping and the swell was really peaky. There were lots of makeable corners to be had and a lot of ass-kickings being handed out by Mother Ocean.
I managed to snag a smaller inside wave that invited me to pull in. It started dredging over the shallow sandbar I was surfing (all alone, cheee!) and I could see the shoulder in sight, but I was a tad too deep. Instead of straightening out, I figured I might as well try to get that "inside the barrel looking to the shoulder shot". Unfortunately, the wave didn't get that memo and decided to take me out.
Sand all up in places I don't want sand, but the shot turned out pretty cool. Still not the one I'm looking for, but I'm getting close. Practice makes perfect right? Even if it means getting all buss up. Auurrryte!
